Mastercard is letting online shoppers pay without passwords or pin numbers, by sending photos of themselves instead. Face recognition software in the ‘Identity Check mobile app’ does the rest. During trials, 92pc of subjects preferred the new system to passwords – and Mastercard expects selfies to kill off passwords ‘within 5 years’. Great for those of us who can’t remember our passwords, or who want a more ‘frictionless’ shopping experience, but what are the wider implications for ID and surveillance?
