Viral microbead campaign results in law change

In 2015, The Story of Stuff launched a campaign to ban plastic microbeads from personal care products. The campaign against microbeads grew to form a coalition of over 100 groups and active citizen engagement to push for a ban. This message was spread through social media platforms and through pressure on industry.

On 18 December 2015, Congress amended the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by passing the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015.

Resulting legislation makes it illegal in 2017 to sell a product with plastic microbeads.
