Federal judge rules that California cities can sue oil companies over climate change in state court

A federal judge has ruled that cities like San Francisco and Oakland can seek damages from oil companies in state courts. Before, these lawsuits were limited to federal courts.

So what?

This will make it easier for cities to seek damages from oil/fossil fuel companies for things that often fall under state jurisdiction such as public health, “public nuisance”, and other community impacts. These cases are often dismissed in federal court.
