Waste products like corncobs, wood pulp, cotton, and tomato peels can be turned into micro or nano-scale particles capable of extracting rare earth minerals from electronic waste via electrostatic interactions.

Rare earth metals are used to manufacture strong magnets and batteries needed for energy transitions. Can efforts to recycle the metals be scaled to address gaps in demand and allow us to avoid mining these metals in challenging environments?
