Equity Commission meets to rewire the US’s unjust agriculture system

In a historical decision, the USDA held its very first Equity Commission in February 2022. The subcommittee works to make sure no one is left behind as we transform to better practices for the land.  Addressing long-standing inequities along with a racial wealth gap, the team will come up with ways to rework policies, structures and work to remove all barriers that encourage economic, political, or social discrimination.

So what?

Advancing equity will be key to scaling solutions within the agricultural sector. Farmers can not be expected to work on climate solutions and build resilience when they face constant hurdles economically and politically. Such an effort can be a step towards increased well-being, dignity and increased access to capital and resources creating a new system allowing all stakeholders to shape and benefit from it.
