I guess things like Task Rabbit come close to this 'instant gratification' for work? I remember Alisha's excellent blog on the downsides of the sharing economy, which is the first thing I think about when I hear of an example like Gig. I'd like to point to Momo Central as an example of the 'new-age intermediary', which serves the function of project design and management at the start of a web development engagement - diagnosing your needs and recommending an individual/ team from a network of qualified talents (i.e. freelancers) - and quality control in the delivery phase, ensuring customer service/ satisfaction. Probably biased as I know the founder and a lot of her clients. It'll be fascinating if we can do a series of interviews with a range of businesses trying to do the same thing across different sectors to see what different types of challenges they face - I expect it's much more intuitive to people who are working in the tech/ digital graphic design space.

Interestingly, all our futures projects with partners in Asia, across different sectors like property, aviation, agriculture, etc. have all surfaced 'changing workforce' as a factor that will have an impact on the future of their businesses. Not surprising, since people are the common denominator across any sector. There are usually 2 aspects identified, the changing expectations of the work force ("We don't understand these Gen Y workers, why are they so demanding and difficult to motivate or please? In my time...") and the changing nature of the workforce, as automation comes into play across every industry - requiring workers who have a very different set of skills from before. Yet workforce-related factors often don't end up being prioritised when it comes to picking factors that have strategic implications. Perhaps it's because this is so tricky to tackle, that management teams would rather deal with something less "human"?

Having worked with the Sustainable Shipping Initiative and some of Forum's partners in the shipping industry, I've heard, read and written much about how containerisation disrupted the previous modus operandi of the industry and completely changed the face of global trade in the mid to late 1990s. Reading this signal about the plateau in performance/ productivity improvements of container ships makes me think we will soon see the rise of new, alternative global economic models (e.g. distributed manufacturing?) Not to say that shipping, or logistics and transportation more generally, is going to disappear, but it seems like the global logistics systems are in for a makeover, and companies within the system who "play by the old rules" might not be ready for it.
