Signal of change / Tesla batteries for grid electricity storage go online in California

By Gwyneth Marcelo / 21 Apr 2017
Utilities companies throughout California are awarding contracts for batteries to store electricity from the grid. One installation in Southern California, capable of powering 15,000 homes over 4 hours, went online in January 2017.

So what?

Battery storage enables solar to become a mainstream power source by managing fluctuations in supply from day to night. They also help utilities companies avoid large capital investments in natural gas plants to respond to peak energy needs, rather than average energy needs.
