China stops over 100 coal power projects

Signal of change / China stops over 100 coal power projects

By Joy Green / 03 Feb 2017

On 14 January, China's energy regulator suspended over 100 coal-fired power projects that were underway in eleven provinces, with a combined installed capacity of more than 100 GW. This is part of an ambitious national programme to curb fossil fuel use, and increase the use of renewable sources such as solar and wind for electricity generation. China has previously stated that it plans to eliminate or delay at least 150 GW of coal-fired power projects between 2016 and 2020 and cap coal power generation at 1,100 GW. The planned increase in solar and wind capacity over the same period is comparable, at 130 GW. For reference, this is the same size as France's entire current renewable power generation capacity.

So what?

China's leadership in the energy transition is increasingly important as the new Trump administration in the US tries to row back on climate change commitments. China's continued dedication to fulfilling its pledges is an important signal that the momentum away from fossil fuels - and towards renewables - remains strong at the global level.
